A Notice From WorkSafe:

Illegal sale and use of distress signals (flares)

We’re issuing a reminder about the illegal sale of distress signals, commonly known as marine flares or flares.

There have been several recent events where distress signals have been used, including entertainment venues, sporting events and political protests. Distress signals contain a small explosive charge and burn at high temperatures. Incorrect use of flares can cause harm to people (such as burns and eye injuries) and property.

Distress signals are pyrotechnic devices that should be used for signaling, warning, or rescue purposes only. The most common example being the use of distress signals on recreational marine vessels. Sale of distress signals should only be to a person with a reasonable excuse for possession, for example, a boat licence.

We recommended all retailers request evidence of a reasonable excuse at the time of purchase.
